TomoTherapy
As a leader in health care innovation, we are the first hospital in the region to provide TomoTherapy in the fight against cancer.
"TomoTherapy allows us to precisely aim and concentrate radiation, allowing precision and accuracy that we’ve never offered before in the area of radiation treatment," says Dr. Jeff Carlton, radiation oncologist at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center. "For patients, the process is smooth, easy and comfortable. We can now treat cancer better and faster than before."
Doctors have been using radiation therapy to treat cancer for decades. The challenge in using radiation therapy is assuring that the radiation beam reaches the tumor while sparing the healthy tissue when giving high doses of radiation.
TomoTherapy meets these challenges by:
- Capturing 3D CT images of the treatment area, and using these 3D images to aim the treatment with accuracy and precision.
- Using the CT scanner design to deliver radiation from all angles around the patient. With more beam angles during the treatment, the better the procedure can shape the radiation dose around the tumor and away from normal tissues.
